03/01/21 - New Music Monday

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Happy March new music people!

What I'm finding this year is there's so much new music and good new music being released every week that it's hard to make it through my list of what to listen to. This is a very good problem to have and I'm not complaining but it does give me the feeling that I'm missing new talent and that bums me out. Later on in 2021 I will probably have a 'Songs I Missed' playlist for all of the music that I simply didn't find out about in time to feature.

Joy Oladokun brings quiet, resilient truth in her song jordan. She teaches us how to break free of other people's views and judgment and what it's like "building our own promised land". I have a great amount of appreciation for Joy's work and I look forward to hearing more from her.

The talent of our youth never fails to amaze me. 17 year old Isaac Dunbar's new album evil twin is fantastic, I wasn't sure how to pick just two songs off of it for the playlist (my standard limit for one artist so it doesn't overpower the playlist) and finally settled on fan behavior and love, or the lack thereof. Fan behavior is very catchy and playful until you listen to the lyrics which take on a darker meaning of taking advantage of someone who sees you as more than a friend. love, or the lack thereof is pretty much the polar opposite, and could be written from the perspective of the character from fan behavior.

29 by Carly Pearce most likely hits close to home for a lot of 20-somethings. She sings about the expectation by society and yourself that you're supposed to have everything figured out by now and how that couldn't be further from the truth. As all good country songs do, the chorus has a very satisfying resolution to the story she's telling with the words "the year I was gonna live it up, now I'm never gonna live it down"
