05/03/21 - New Music Monday

Updated: May 9, 2021

Happy Monday world,

Spring is the most fickle season; it seems to encompass the other three seasons all in the same week. One day it will snow, the next there will be clouds and crisp air and then it will all change in the blink of an eye and be 80 degrees and windy like a hot summer's day. It's the time of the year when there's a lot of pressure to live in a carpe diem state of mind and forgo relaxation entirely. Despite the bipolar weather, this spring has been a time for a lot of great artists to stop teasing us with singles and finally release their full albums such as Charlotte Cardin and her debut album Phoenix.

I've been looking forward to Charlotte Cardin's new album Phoenix to come out for months now and it was finally released last Friday. From it, I chose "Anyone Who Loves Me" because it seems to speak to the mood and the overall feeling of the album. Phoenix is very much a breakup album and it took Cardin three years to write it; the songs feel carefully chosen and encompass the stages of recovering from a broken heart, from wallowing in grief like in "Anyone Who Loves Me" to the bitter stages of revenge sex in "Sex To Me".

An album that's been making quite the buzz on social media this week is if i could make it go quiet by girl in red. The album is classified as indie pop and to me it feels reminiscent of the first album by Twenty-One Pilots. It explores mental health issues and relationships and how the two interact with each other. My favorite song on the album is "Seratonin" because the hook is instantly catchy and it feels like a favorite song after one listen. The kind of track that should be played loudly while dancing in your room after a really terrible day.

It would be an injustice to not mention the beautiful new song by Billie Eilish "Your Power". Simple, acoustic guitar provides the majority of the instrumentation and the percussion for this direct hit to the disgusting abuse of power by men over underaged women in the entertainment industry. It also serves as a call to men in all positions of power to step up and not "abuse your power".
