It's the last Monday of August and usually that would feel bittersweet because it signifies the end of summer but this year has been so brutally hot that I'm welcoming fall. 70 degrees sounds like heaven when it's 90 with 90% humidity. Coffee shops seem to be over the heat as well and snuck fall flavors back onto their menus within the last few weeks.
This last week saw exciting new releases from Halsey, Kacey Musgraves and Maisie Peters, read on!
Leah Kate takes the high road and makes the best of finding out her boyfriend is cheating in her new single “Veronica”. After meeting Veronica at a bar through a friend of a friend she realizes that they’re dating the same guy and befriends her instead of blaming her. The song is catchy and upbeat despite the subject material with hints of sarcasm woven in.
I was so excited to listen to Maisie Peters’ new album You Signed Up For This and it did not disappoint. Her lyrics are always deeply personal and specific to situations she’s been through but for some reason that makes them endearing instead of alienating. I always feel like I’m one of her closest friends getting to hear about her heartbreak firsthand. The only thing I wish it had was at least one or two songs that weren’t about a bad break up, it is absolutely written in the Adele style of heartbreak and doesn’t stray from that subject throughout the album’s entire 14 song track list. I picked “Boy” and “I’m Trying (Not Friends)” to feature on the playlist. “Boy” keeps to Peters’ style but the influence of her label’s owner, Ed Sheeran, can be heard as it is reminiscent of Sheeran’s “Don’t” from his X album.
